The Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC)

ARRC Mission: to be profitable by focusing on safe, high-quality service to our freight, passenger, and real estate customers; to foster the development of Alaska’s economy by integrating railroad and railbelt community development plans.

Completed in 1923, the Alaska Railroad was built by the Federal government to provide access to various resources within the interior of the Territory of Alaska. The line extended from the Port of Seward in Resurrection Bay to the City of Fairbanks in Interior Alaska. Two expansions were constructed during World War II: a branch line to Whittier and a 29-mile branch from Fairbanks to Eielson Air Force Base near North Pole. The Federal government sold the railroad to the State of Alaska in 1985. Founded in 1984, the Alaska Railroad Corporation is a self-supporting, state-owned corporation responsible for operation and maintenance of the Alaska Railroad. The ARRC currently operates 611 total miles of track, including 466 miles of main line, and provides both freight and passenger service.

The Alaska Railroad continues its tradition of support for the Alaska community. ARRC is a powerful economic engine hauling more than 7 million tons of freight per year. ARRC transports gravel and other building materials to support the construction of Alaskan homes, businesses and roadways. And the railroad’s heavy-haul capability sustains critical resource industries such as coal, petroleum, and mineral extraction. ARRC trains carry more than 500,000 passengers annually, providing access for Alaskans and visitors from tidewater in Seward and Whittier to the interior of Alaska. In addition, the railroad directly employs nearly 800 people in communities across the state. Railroad spending also supports another 1,100 indirect jobs throughout the Alaskan economy.
